Giant Bomb’s E3 live night shows are always terrific, but this segment with Game Workers Unite’s Emma Kinema and Riot Game’s Jocelyn Monahan really transcends into something more important. Following a series of reports on poor working conditions and years of brutal production cycles, the video game industry is in the midst of its first real push towards worker unionization. It's a difficult road; gaming is a notoriously toxic culture where even the best parts of the community aren’t particiuarly educated about the nuances of labor struggles, while outside labor organizers often aren't aware of the specific ways game development works. What’s so excellent about this segment is how it bridges the gap between these two groups. It explains the importance of unions in clear-eyed terms while also acknowledging how traditional labor structures could work in the games industry.
Really can’t recommend the segment enough, check it out.
